Filipino Artist Bert Monterona in Surrey Recognized for Indigenous Traditional Art

SURREY.CA – Filipino Canadian artist Bert Monterona is determined to document vanishing indigenous traditional art processes, and promote the use of indigenous art materials. At this Thursday Artist Talk event, Laura Moodie will introduce the work of Vancouver-based Monterona, followed by a question and answer period with artist. Monterona became well known in his homeland for creating paintings with locally-made textile paint applied with different shapes of flat bamboo sticks on chipboard, a cheap and readily-available material. He also creates tapestry-like wall murals from dye, textile paint, and acrylic on canvas, giving these works the look and feel of hand woven cloth and artifacts from South East Asia’s past. A selection of Monterona’s bamboo stick paintings and tapestry-like wall murals will be shown.

Bert Monterona is an artist, educator and cultural worker who designs, illustrates, paints, sculpts and creates installations, sets and props for stage performances and TV shows. Born on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, he first exhibited in Canada at Simon Fraser University in 2004. Both nationally and internationally acclaimed, he has shown his artwork around the world, and is the recipient of accolades including most recently the 2009 Artist in Residence Program and Mural Project of the Leigh Square Community Arts Village (City of Port Coquitlam), and the 2007 Winner of the International Mural Festival and Competition in Manitoba. As an artist-educator, Monterona has organized art workshops in schools and communities around the world. His art-as-therapy and peace-building initiatives have been presented to art educators, social workers, street and underprivileged children and youth, artists, fine art students, and art enthusiasts.

The First Ever Filipino Cultural Street Parade was a huge success last year. Thousands joined the parade with colorful and amazing costumes and floats. To commemorate this monumental event, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson Proclaimed “Filipino Fiesta Day” in the City of Vancouver.

This year’s celebration will be another first to the Filipino community. For the very first time, the Filipino-Canadians will celebrate the very popular Pinoy Fiesta: Unang Hirit sa Tag-init at the famous Olympic Village on False Creek, Vancouver. Hataw Pinoy, Philippine Summer Festival – July 23 & 24 2011

Another “riot” is about to unfold in the city on July 23-24, 2011. Only this time, it will be “riotous” fun, great food, and non-stop entertainment as “HATAW PINOY 2011”, the Philippine Summer Festival unfolds at the Forum of Vancouver’s Olympic landmark, the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE). The Filipino Canadian Cultural Heritage Society (FCCHS) announced its second staging of the event, which was launched last year at the Richmond Olympic oval grounds and came out to be the largest summer event of the Filipino community.

With more than 120,000 Filipino Canadians in BC, where a good 96,000 are scattered all over the Metro Vancouver area, some 10%-15% are expected to grace the festivities, with various representative groups coming from the neighbouring cities of Kelowna, Kamloops, Victoria, Whistler, Squamish, Pemberton and from across the border in Seattle,WA. Last year’s celebration also saw the participation of some families who came all the way from Calgary, Alberta and planned to have their clan reunion by attending the Summer Festival at the Oval.
